      Pretty much

Regardless of the type of clearance, the government is increasingly desperate. Science/analyst oriented jobs almost always pay a LOT better in the private sector (or for a contractor) and are increasingly just grabbing people straight out of grad school rather than poaching them from their government org equivalent.

And finding anyone dumb enough to join the us military at this point is a massive challenge. Even the hardcore klan member republicans would rather shoot up schools at home than have to wait to be deployed in whatever Middle Eastern country we are destroying this week. Bonus points for being able to trick out their M4 however they want.

So if someone is a US Citizen and willing to deal with government bullshit? Just about anything can be negated by admitting to it (the idea that it can’t influence you if it is not a secret). And even if you don’t admit to murdering twelve hookers last year, they’ll just chalk it up to you being young and stupid and give you a slap on the wrist. About the only thing that CAN torpedo a clearance is admitting you have tried the mary-ju-ana even once. And, if they are desperate enough, they just make you sign a bunch of paperwork and harass you about it for the rest of your life.

Fascinating read. I find it less interesting that he got through the initial security screening and more interesting that he was noticed accessing, and writing down, information from JWICS and no one reported that up the chain. Though, I’m also not surprised that the DoD had no clue about what documents he accessed. There is almost certainly a Security Compliance item for “Data Loss Prevention software is installed and running”. So, it was probably on the terminal and running. And then fuck-all was done with the logs, because there’s no checkbox for that. And so, they just got over-written on the shortest possible schedule, to save disk space.
