I wanted to mention the similar practice of decorating guns with Paki tape, and ended up finding an article that also showed off the same sweater picture.
The Paki tape practice is especially pronounced in Afghanistan.
While the Paki tape practice may also sometimes be done for utility reasons, it is often decorative.

That’s actually where I got the picture from. I found an AK w/ blue paki tape on it then stumbled onto this and the Ukrainian rifle I posted while researching.
Wow the Ukranian rifle in that article is very cool.
It seems unwise to put brightly colored decorations all over your weapon, when the objective is to stay hidden.
