    https://fortune.com/2023/12/19/biden-canceled-one-hundred-billion-dollars-student-debt/

They’ve forgiven $132 billion so far. It’s not what we wanted, but unfortunately the Republican stacked Supreme Court said Biden couldn’t do blanket forgiveness.

It’s almost like it matters not just who the president is today, but who the president was for the past several decades. And who is and was in Congress.

We can build on what Biden and the Democrats did accomplish, but only if we give them the tools to do so. If we want more stuff like the child tax credit expansion that we got in 2021, we have to reelect Biden and get strong Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. If we want more stuff like the inflation reduction act that is creating jobs and repairing infrastructure, we have to vote for Democrats.

They’ve made it clear they want to do more (i.e. build back better, blanket student loan forgiveness, protect abortion rights). Those long drawn out fights with Manchin and Sinema weren’t just for show. They were a clear indication of what the Democratic Party wants to pass if it has the votes in Congress.

You know a lot. Do you happen to know how they selected who would be forgiven their student loans and who wouldn’t be forgiven?

I’m a disabled military veteran and they are garnishing all of my disability pay for the next 2 years until my ex-husband’s GI Bill is paid off.

I am severely ill but since they’re garnishing all of my benefits, I still have to work to survive, I am stumbling through work and I am extremely sick today and had to take the day off,

again I ask, how does the government decide whose student loan debts are being forgiven, and whose aren’t?

Depends on if you apply for one of the many programs available. If you are 100% disabled per the VA you would qualify for the Total and Permanent Disability Discharge (TPD). Call Nelnet’s TPD department ASAP. Here is their site: https://www.disabilitydischarge.com/

Feel free to DM me if you want to know more, this is literally my day job.

I am only 70% rating. And since July 2023 I’ve been trying to get into the VRE program but they are not very responsive. Many people apply, few are chosen.

      “He”

Who? If you’re talking about Biden, yeah he tried but was completely blocked by Congress.

Contrary to popular belief, the office of the President (any president, not just him) is actually quite limited in its power.

Maybe you should go back to school and learn a little more about politics. Seriously, I learned about checks and balances from a talking animated piece of parchment in like 2nd grade.

So can one political party do a significant amount of work to stop another from doing stuff or no? Democrats always complain about republicans keeping them from doing anything, but let republicans get away with taking away so many rights and committing so many atrocities. Checks and balances is supposed to go both ways, and democrats have never checked or balanced jack shit

I learned that too. But that doesn’t shield t our right wing president from criticism. Clearly the system is broken.

              our right wing president

He’s right-wing only in the sense that American politics is so far right compared to other industrialized countries that even the left-wing is right-wing in comparison.

Compared to America’s right-wing (aka fascists, aka Republicans (the party, not everyday people, though many of them too)), he’s basically Jesus.

But that doesn’t shield our … president from criticism.

Agreed, but criticizing him for stuff he’s not guilty of only degrades the credibility of actual legit criticisms. It’s the boy who cried wolf.

              Clearly the system is broken.

              On that we can agree.

So since we agree, then condescending to me wasn’t exactly called for, now was it?

If you agree that student loans should be categorically forgiven, then I agree.

And I never suggested not voting for him, but he’s not a good person. He’s got my friends and loved ones detained and/or deported. Don’t get me wrong, I’d vote for him over Republicans, but it really fucking sucks that that’s our choice, and it’s not a reasonable request for me to not criticize his absolute dogshit pro-capitalist worldview.

Okay, I’ve gone through my responses and can’t see it. Please point out where exactly I was condescending to you. If I was, then I apologize; that was not my intention.

If you agree that student loans should be categorically forgiven …

I do. Not by category, but completely across the board.

but he’s not a good person.

                  Agreed.

He’s got my friends and loved ones detained and/or deported.

I think that really sucks and I don’t blame you for being upset about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d vote for him over Republicans, but it really fucking sucks that that’s our choice,

I agree that that non-choice choice is a shitty situation.

and it’s not a reasonable request for me to not criticize his absolute dogshit pro-capitalist worldview.

I never said you can’t criticize him. I’m not opposed to that. I’m opposed to criticizing him for stuff he didn’t do, like claiming he didn’t attempt the shit out of loan forgiveness without being subject to asshole Republicans blocking every goddamn thing he does if it goes against their tyrannical wants, like petulant children having a tantrum.
