I usually brew 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning in the Moccamaster. Sometimes around midday I’ll make a single cup of decaf in my v60.

It has been a while since I made a cup of decaf and didn’t feel like finding/digging out my kettle and this setup occurred to me, so I went for it.

As it was brewing, I realized I probably should have just brewed into the Moccamaster pot, but my brain was still focused on decaf=v60.

Should I surrender my self to the authorities now?

I know it isn’t really the point, but your setup is so visually pleasant. Very aesthetic.

Haha - thanks! I’m typically a function over form type, but I fell in love with the colors of the Moccamaster brewers so I just leaned into it.

Here’s a wide shot of my (ever transforming) setup. It’s the happiest I’ve been with it in both form and function

It’s almost funny how many brewing methods I went through to finally settle on one of the most basic automatic drip machines out there 😅

It does good coffee for sure. People in Finland drink a shitload of it so makes sense to get a good machine.

I’ve made Yerba mate in my Moccamaster before, just have to clean it real well before you do. It comes out really good and better tasting than if I steep.

I assume it’s just the brew basket you need to clean thoroughly?

I don’t know much about Yerba Mate, but I did recently learn it’s a caffeinated holly shrub after we moved to a new house and I discovered we have a different caffeinated holly shrub in our yard (Yaupon holly).

From what I’ve read, the indigenous people here used Yaupon to make a caffeinated beverage but the colonial European tea traders were so concerned it would impact their business they spread the rumors that it caused vomiting. They were so successful in their smear campaign that it lead to the scientific name for Yaupon Holly being Ilex vomitoria 😅

Yeah I just make sure there’s no coffee residue in the basket or the carafe. Yerba is pretty bitter so the Moccamaster technique seems to mellow it out. Plus, the name brand I bought is really dusty so I get a nice clean cup brewing it through the paper filter.

Are you brewing directly over the pour over? I’ve never seen that before.

Yeah - I rotated the output arm on the Automatic brewer 180° so it brewed over the pour over instead of over its own brew basket. The design of this particular brewer totally accommodates it but I don’t think it was intentional…I’ve never seen it done before anyway.

Does it taste different than just brewing normally? I am intrigued cause I have the exact same brewer.

To me, not particularly, but one thing I’ve learned after trying tons of brewing setups is, I don’t really have that refined of a palate…

Eh, no biggie, though just means you’re just doing standard drip coffee!

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and fellow witnesses of this remarkable moment, I stand before you today with profound gratitude and humility. Completing this seemingly trivial task has been a journey filled with challenges and triumphs.

I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the unwavering support of my alarm clock and my coffee maker, as well as the wavering support of my cat. This achievement is a testament to the extraordinary power of perseverance in the face of the ordinary.

      Thank you 🙏 🥉

What’s the water in the carafe for, are you heating it for something?

    • @ccunningOP

It’s just evidence of 1) my laziness and 2) my biggest complaint with the Moccamaster: No volume marks on the carafe

Easier to over fill it at the sink, than under fill and make two trips. And since I was brewing into the v60 it didn’t really matter.

The brewer also has no way to turn off the hot plate independently of the water heater and I’d actually be worried to put an empty carafe there. I’ve seen them explode when doing that before.

What can I say? My love of coffee exceeds my body’s capacity to process caffeine.

Before we were old enough to drink my friends and I would sit in the local diner shooting the shit and drinking free refills of coffee until the sun started coming up before we would go home and immediately crash.

Can’t do that anymore. One of the first ways my body started failing me as I’ve gotten older…

    Great looking setup!

I love drip coffee and then was a French press guy for years but now I’m a decaff pour over type with the ceramic top. I wish there were drip machines without plastic.

Trying to remember my exact progression; I think it was:

      • Cheap auto-drip (very brief)
      • French press (few years)
      • Moka pot (few months)
      • French press (few years)
      • Aeropress (few years)
      • Espresso - BBE (couple years)
      • Percolator - (very brief)
      • Aeropress (about a year)
      • Keurig 🤪(too long…6mo?)
      • Pour over- v60 (very brief)
      • Expensive auto-drip

…which is where I’ve been for a couple months now, but intend to stay for the long haul…

Pretty cunning if you ask me.
How’s the flow rate on dat boi?

If the temp hot enough and, and flow is good enough, why not?

I’m sorry, but 4 cups by midday??

You drink over a liter of coffee before afternoon?? 😂

I love coffee, but I feel like the caffeine addiction at that point would be debilitating.

And to think I was worried about going to coffee geek jail for unapproved brewing methods.

Turns out I’m going to coffee geek jail for drinking too much coffee…

Sorry for letting everyone down 😞
