most people who live near rivers already get potable water from processed wastewater just by virtue of those upstream pumping it back into the rivers after treatment. (as briefly mentioned in the article)

im not am expert, but i feel like the treated wastewater is cleaner than whatever you could possibly be pulling from the river. but i can understand the mental hurdle.
