The harmonisation organisation SAE International published a corresponding document which turns Tesla's de-facto standard into a NACS connector standard. The development prompted the US Department of Transportation to look into adding NACS to its funding requirements, and Volkswagen has now also come on board.

The SAE J3400 North American Charging Standard (NACS) Electric Vehicle Coupler Technical Information Report’ was released less than six months after SAE announced that it would standardise the Tesla connector, finalising the standardisation process. The DoT commented that this happened with “unprecedented speed”.

    The society of automotive engineers doesn’t have that authority. Now if the DOT or another government agency was to say that, it would be a different story.
