The great open source classic. Did you play it? How many different systems have you installed it on over the years?

I can honestly say i’ve been playing it for so long i don’t even remember what all i’ve played it on. I’ve even had it on phones and such.

The rich modding and active fan community really help with longevity, too, and i wish more games would take a cue from that.

I’ve had this installed in literally every computer I’ve owned since I learned about this game back in college. I was opened up to a whole world of open source gaming and this game, stuck with me for a long time. Funnily enough also, I am still terrible at it to this day, only really know how to play the Drakes, and the overall low chance to hit still infuriates me sometimes. I tried installing mods to make it deterministic, but it’s still not what I’d like. If it could be a bit more like Panzer Corps it would be perfect.

The emphasis on 50% hit rates (60% is “accurate”), leads to a very swingy game. Wesnoth has many attacks in most cases, but Dwarven Thundersticks only have one (massive) shot, as well as Trolls with 2x attacks.

The game is designed around this level of luck, but I wish the game designers opted for less variance.

Still, its a good game, with well designed units handling a myriad of different roles.

I tried it once, but the scaling on my monitor was pretty bad. Maybe I should give it another try.
