California•Want faster election results? California Democrats won’t clamp down on late voters
1·25 days agoDrawing out the vote counting process opens up certain kinds of fraud, mostly benefiting the party with the best mobilization so that they can scramble to harvest votes if they need them. On the other hand, making this kind of fraud more difficult opens up other kinds of fraud or voter disenfranchisement which can benefit a different party.
Conservation efforts are financed very heavily by hunters. Game tags, licenses, etc. So yes they should be conservative and also they are, but generally only with regard to preservation of wilderness with respect to health and population of game.

OccamsRazertoHacker News@lemmy.bestiver.se•Notes from Tired Egyptian Whose Job Is Explaining That Humans Built the PyramidsEnglish
2·29 days agoThe simplest explanation is that humans built it. Alien technology is not required to accomplish building the pyramids. But that isn’t quite the same as the evidence required to prove it. Having said that, it’s an unnecessary question, just as relevant as any other random and baseless theory. It’s just not worth discussing.
BBC is state sponsored news, so you get whatever the state wants you to think. Always been that way.

Pro-Democracy Political Memes@piefed.social•GOP qualifications are unyielding, but a large proportion of the population qualifies anywayEnglish
1·29 days agoI’m imaging a really stupid person reading the billboard and saying “yep that’s me”. Then I’m imaging another stupid person saying “What? I’m not afraid of smart people!”, and then deciding to switch parties. But then I realized that it’s a meme and it isn’t actually meant to change anyone’s mind.

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•Luigi Mangione to use psychiatric defence in healthcare CEO murder case
1·30 days agoThat’s a pretty weak argument, but his only strong argument has to go against the system itself, lose, then fight it up to the supreme court and try to argue somehow that it was justified. He’s pretty much screwed because i don’t see that happening.
It started while Biden was in office due to instability in the region of central America that functioned as a wall to the rest of North America, so there is some truth to it. Trump cutting funding was the wrong thing to do at the wrong time, but the problem was already well under way when he took office.

11·1 month agoThe screw worm comeback started in 2023. The wall of protection in central America failed and now it’s like starting from scratch. It’s going to take a much bigger effort to contain. I don’t know why the wall failed in central America, but it’s probably generally related to economic and political instability. Is that Biden’s fault? Could be, but probably only in the indirect sense that they could have noticed the issue and done something to prevent it. It almost certainly would have happened under any other president as well, but politics is going to do politics things so blame will get bounced around depending on the narrative you want to focus on.

1·1 month agoMy aunt got locked out of her house because the battery powered smart lock died in the cold. So she couldn’t get in when it was late at night and freezing cold. Had to get a locksmith out, which probably cost her a couple hundred dollars.
That’s what the paradox of intolerance is for; justifying violence while maintaining the moral high ground.
