Boomers did not elect FDR, if they had continued the politics of their parents we would be much better off. There is plenty of blame to go around. The true villains are the oligarchs and politicians who do/did their bidding but that does not absolve the foot soldiers.

The older generation ceded our power to the wealthy. They went gleefully along with tax policy designed to move money to the top, anti union legislation, increasing costs of education, stymieing environmental regulation, not pursuing and enforcing trust busting measures, offshoring industry, etc , etc. They weren’t the driving force, you could claim they were tricked, but it was their own short sighted greed and often bigotry that allowed them to go along with it. And they by and large continue to support all that same shit.

5·17 days agoMarkets are not a function of capitalism; feudalism, mercantilism, etc. all had markets. There would be and have been markets in communist governments. Marx himself held the same sentiment about markets being effective for similar reasons you listed.
American football has been referred to as just football (in America) longer than football (soccer) was called just football in Britain. It was called association football as a distinct game separate from rugby football and other football games. Football distinguishing it from games played on horseback. Soccer was British slang from association (similarly at the time rugby football has slang term rugger.) Eventually the association part fell out of use but other countries that had developed their own football games tended to still call it soccer. I don’t really care either way, I’ll call it football when talking to people who call it football and soccer with people who call out soccer, I just think the origin of the terms is pretty interesting.
What you have heard about AA is true, I just want to make a couple clarifications. The first, or one of the first, steps of the alcoholics anonymous famous 12 step program is to submit yourself to a higher power. , but nowadays when it comes up they are quick to emphasize that this does not have to be God. It can be a rock or a pet or object, but their system is built off of that. That you must make yourself accountable to something and let it take over some of the decision making responsibilities. I’ve never been able to see this as anything other than religious thinking and feel it is a distinction without meaning, but if you end up discussing this with proponents of the system be ready for that curve ball. Secondly, to call it the USA system is not correct. It is just one addiction treatment option, though given US religiousity it is the biggest and most will known. Many others are also essentially the same process but a different organization. Where things get tricky is that people that are charged with crimes involving drugs or alcohol are offered leniency in sentencing on condition that they go through an approved addiction program, especially in remote areas AA is sometimes the only option. This has been challenged by atheists and I believe that the courts always end up allowing for them to use a non religious program, but that will only be the people that can afford to make another legal case based on their principals and are able to find an alternative addiction program to enroll in in their area.
Pack the court. In the past the mere threat of that has brought the justices to heel.

3·7 months agoMoney laundering is falsifying financial info to disguise the source of the money. People are allowed to give you money and you are allowed to take it, as long as you report accurately and pay taxes it’s fine. Where you might run into trouble is the school or people/orgs attached to the school giving you money on the condition of you going out staying there. Basically the money has to be donated without any agreements being made and it would be fine. As I understand things, I am not an expert or even particularly knowledgeable, but you ask strangers on the Internet and you get what you get 🤣

5·8 months agoI think he means it more to emphasize that he didn’t switch due to concern for animal welfare or environmental reasons, but rather that making the change was a good business decision and has been beneficial to them as a family. Rather than it being a sacrifice for ideology, so other farmers unhappy with the business model they felt trapped in can also get out. He finishes the quote saying something like ‘if we did it you can too.’

politics •'Planned and purposeful': Case made for first-degree murder charges in Alex Pretti's deathEnglish
5·8 months agoA grand jury will not create double jeopardy because it happens before charges are brought. It’s a way for a prosecutor to see if the evidence they have is strong enough. If a grand jury does not indict they can try again with new evidence or a different approach. They aren’t necessarily required for every criminal case. But making a weak case to a grand jury is a way prosecutors avoid charging cops while claiming to have tried their best to the public. Especially with the secrecy around them.

61·8 months agoNot usually. Prosecutions for police shootings in the US are rare. Typically just an internal investigation done by another department that clears the shooter. It must be extra egregious or have serious public pressure for an AD to even attempt to bring charges.
There are a couple reasons (that I know of) why JKR is considered bad by many left wing and liberal people. One is that she is a “trans exclusive radical feminist” or TERF. These are people that are feminist but anti trans, not liked by people pro trans rights. Second is that in Harry Potter there are many instances of racist tropes and/or ‘casual’ or ‘unintended’ racism. Her depiction of goblins has a lot of characteristics from antisemitic stereotypes, greedy, big nose, etc. There are very few POC in the Harry Potter story, and sometimes their implementation seems problematic, i.e. the seemingly only asian character being named Cho Chang. This meme in particular regards the seeming disconnect between the quote cited and her anti trans stance.

5·9 months agoIt is true. Pretty much everything in the south was racially segregated until they were forced to stop by the federal government. It is a big topic, basically after the end of slavery white southerners would not allow black Americans to use the same facilities as them. Schools, churches, restaurants, even drinking fountains. It was/is a problem all across the country but very extreme in the ex-confederate states. Here is the wiki for the US civil rights movement, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_rights_movement . They are no longer segregated as a matter of law but the effects of slavery and Jim Crow still have their mark on our society. Racism in general is an ongoing and systemic issue.

11·10 months agoJeffries has neglected to take a position on Trump’s proposal to preempt state regulations. Last Monday, he told reporters, “That conversation hasn’t been brought to the leadership level yet.”
Conversations should start at the leadership level. Wtf does he think a leader is supposed to do?

Prosecuting crimes does not require any voting. The president is in charge of that. He runs the DOJ and enforces the rules. It doesn’t sound like you understand how the government works. Trump broke laws already on the books, the Biden administration failed to hold them to account. Congress is not needed to prosecute crimes.
