3·4 hours agoActive functioning search engine website “OFFICIAL LAUNCHES” - Google: August 1998 Yandex: 23 September 1997
What on Earth is this link supposed to show? Did you just expect that nobody would check it?
In August 1998, Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote Larry and Sergey a check for $100,000, and Google Inc. was officially born. With this investment, the newly incorporated team made the upgrade from the dorms to their first office: a garage in suburban Menlo Park, California, owned by Susan Wojcicki (employee #16 and former CEO of YouTube). Clunky desktop computers, a ping pong table, and bright blue carpet set the scene for those early days and late nights.
This once again establishes that Google Inc. came about in August 1998, not that Google Search did. Google Search existed in 1997; it was a registered, functioning website with a web search engine.
Edit: Huh, I see it’s a bit more complicated. Google Search was available at
google.stanford.eduduring 1997. Which is still a functioning domain that uses Google Search to index the web.
Edit 2: Unrelated to this, the fact the first version of the Google logo was created in GIMP is so quaint. TIL

2·5 hours agoI’m not really sure why this would be happening either. Sometimes federation can be a problem with mod tools, so maybe the fact a lemmy.ml account removed your lemmy.world comment made something go awry. Mod tools in Lemmy are kind of cursed, and I prefer to only use them for basic functionality.

21·4 hours agoDouble nope.
Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search, [emphasis mine] which has become the most used web-based search engine.
Google Search had already existed since the domain was registered. (EDIT: See comments below. I don’t know that this is true. It seems
google.stanford.eduwas up as a functioning web search engine in 1997, but this is getting murky.) You’re talking about Google Inc. the company which was created in 1998. Google Search was launched in 1997.However, by that comparison, it’s vastly less close, as Yandex LLC was first legally registered 14 September 2000.
TL;DR: You were comparing apples to oranges.
Search website:
- Google: 15 September 1997
- Yandex: 23 September 1997
Legally registered company:
- Google Inc.: 1998
- Yandex LLC: 14 September 2000
Edit: And to clarify, I think the sensible metric here, that works in Yandex’s favor by bringing the two within eight days of each other instead of approximately two years, is to use the date their search engine websites launched and were functioning, not when they filed paperwork that said “We’re legally a company now 🥳”.

Which makes them hilariously close, but Google still precedes Yandex, as their search engine websites were their first products.

You Should Know•YSK that there's a full, effectively official list of Flock surveillance camerasEnglish
7·7 hours agoThis kind of even basic information is being deliberately obscured from us; we’re just supposed to shut up and treat our occupation by a surveillance corporation as a fact of life. Misunderstandings about it should be treated as an opportunity to build solidarity; I feel happy to have taught you something about it.

14·7 hours agoFYI, “Falcon” is a Flock model, not a separate brand. This website is specifically Flock-branded cameras, but non-Flocks, as stated, are more than welcome on an open knowledgebase like OpenStreetMap.

3·8 hours agoStrange. For some reason, in Voyager’s mod log, I can see “Reason: Rule 4”.
Levite’s concubine. It’s actually so fucked up that I had to tone down and oversimplify it to make it just barely fit into a “Florida man” headline.

8·10 hours agoDon’t expect to show how useful a car can be in something like fuckcars.
I actually do expect to be able to give pushback in communities like [email protected]. In a crosspost from fuckcars to [email protected], which allows reasonable debate (ironically, until writing this, I thought I had written that in fuckcars), I controversially argued that a misdemeanor charge for a motorist who struck and killed a bicyclist was appropriate (it’s more nuanced than that, but seriously try to imagine a more contentious surface-level statement that isn’t just rage-bait). So you can see that I have no problem giving controversial pushback when I think something is wrong.
fuckcars’ five rules are “Be civil”, “No hate speech”, “Don’t harass people”, “Stay on topic”, and “No reposts”. I’ve never gone to fuckcars to give pushback on something and had any inkling that if I “show how useful a car can be” I’ll have my comment removed, let alone be permanently banned.

6·11 hours agoThe mods of that community have to work overtime to keep it clean
To the standards of their own rules they clearly don’t, given “Be civil in comments” is the first component of Rule 6, yet they neglect to enforce it whenever they feel like it and can’t be bothered to even follow it themselves.
They’re not “keeping it clean”; they’re just doing whatever they want in a way that strictly protects an in-group and strictly binds an out-group.

6·11 hours agoespecially when you consider that latestagecapitalism is just an echochamber of hating on the current system.
By that argument, I don’t understand why @[email protected]’s comment was removed. Not only did it hate on the current system, but it outright objectively hated on the current system more than the OP. It kept Democrats at exactly the same level of contempt but showed even more contempt than the OP did for Republicans.

8·11 hours agoIt really feels like you intentionally tried to skirt the edge of that rule by writing a comment which would be interpreted as if you’re saying one thing while technically saying something more defensible.
I was not. I do not believe they’re paid, a bot, or otherwise part of some mass-coordinated scheme.
What I was saying and believe simply was defensible, and I don’t think that’s a technicality.

I hate that I have to ask this, OP, but given your history of retaining first-person pronouns in posts you stole from Reddit:

Ask Lemmy•What are some of your favorite lines from song lyrics?English
4·18 hours agoTally Hall’s song “Ruler of Everything” is a “nothing matters and that’s terrifying” song. Contrasting that song, though, earlier in the album is “Spring and a Storm”, imo a “nothing matters and that’s okay and special” song. It ends with:
Create until nothing is left to create
And the Universe bursts with an overworked sigh
Then pretend to, pretend to recrown the creation
And sing the same thing 'til the clouds start to cry
And then over and over and over again
And then over and over and-- never again…
In my opinion, a commentary on how everything has already been done and it’s all recycled, but it’s special because we’re here now, and eventually, on a personal and a universal level, there’ll be a last time.

I made a write-up earlier on YPTB showing how the mods on LSC are overreaching even within the repressive rules they write to stifle criticism – and totally ignoring them themselves.
