  • Uh, I heard it in the news.

Iirc, the ICO (data protection regulator) preliminarily found that imgur was selling user data to advertisers, having been profiling users for age band (including children).

They then threatened imgur with a fine if they didn’t agree steps to protect children’s data, but imgur decided to protest by geoblocking the country.

ICO say that liability for previous illegal sale of children’s data does not disappear, and imgur blame it on the much less popular online safety act, which is weird because the investigation started well before the act came into force.

Imgur were also shitty because they deleted a vast amount of older images because the posters didn’t have a subscription with them, which kind of betrays the whole original point of the website.

I think they also sacked the original creators, but I may be mixing them up with another rapidly shittifying webcorp.

    Nope. Don’t need that.

Did you know that the reason imgur blocks the UK is that it is trying to evade a fine for selling children’s personal data?

They are a shit corporation and they already deleted old data for posters that didn’t have a paid subscription with them.

    There are other image hosts.

Lemmy lets you upped directly to your instance and if gets federated.

    Don’t use imgur.

What’s the point of rehosting to a corporation who geoblock immediately and delete later? You may as well link to the original image.

Better, right click, save image to downloads, click the image button in Lemmy, select the most recently downloaded thing, press OK. Optionally clear download(s). It’s no big deal. Now your image is federated. Everyone wins.
