As someone who has only begin to transition in adulthood I have begun to look back at my life and childhood. While I certainly had a lot of other traumas that lead to my struggles with mental health I truly am beginning to understand how profoundly negatively impacted my life has been by not understanding my gender identity. The sheer weight of it is like trying to tread deep water for hours with a lead vest. While there are a myriad of difficulties and tribulations that transgender children face that I will never experience, I can’t help but wonder how much different my life would have been if I had access to gender affirming healthcare back then. I would have faced incredibles trials that a child should never have to experience, but I truly believe I would have gotten where I am today much, much sooner.

No one is advocating for adolescent children to get implants, and gender affirming surgery for children is a controversial topic in the trans community as well. But puberty blockers are completely reversible and very safe, and HRT is most effective and has the best results when administered during adolescence. You aren’t stopping kids from “mutilating” themselves; you’re condemning children to nearly a decade of mental anguish that permeates all aspects of ones life. HRT isn’t just handed out like candy; the getting hormones can often be incredibly difficult and taxing for adults, let alone children. No child gets estrogen or testosterone because it’s “cool” and “trendy” to be trans or because anyone is forcing it one them — it’s nearly always the complete opposite.
