  • Went to my primary doctor to get obesity under control and requested a GLP-1 (my extended family, some of whom have not been obese since childhood, have seen good results). He was not cooperative and kept dismissing using one because insurance would deny it (despite being obese since childhood, trying various times over the years to lose, and having multiple obesity related medical issues including a family history of heart disease and close members having heart attacks/strokes). Instead he decided I just needed a short-term boost to my system by prescribing Phentermine without saying much about it other than it promoted weight loss.

From the first day’s half-dose to ease into it 3 weeks ago, I noticed that my head felt clearer, I felt more relaxed, my palpitations and anxiety were manageable now, I was able to engage more in conversations, I was able to start doing basic chores/hobbies I haven’t done in a long time, and I actually got to bed around 11pm-12am instead of 2am+ and with barely any onset of sleep delay (usually takes me an hour or so once I close my eyes). It wasn’t until I and my family noticed these side effects that I looked up and found out that Phentermine is amphetamine-like. Never expected anything like this on a stimulant. I expected, due to the doctor’s warning, higher anxiety and blood pressure issues. Just sad that this is for short-term use only and won’t likely be able to be refilled.

  • It sucks and I’m sorry that you’re dealing with that. My grandparents had it and that was extremely rough. My wife, kids, and I live with my parents and my Mom has early signs (those were her parents I referenced) and my Dad, though he passes the doctor’s memory tests, seems to be having a type of dementia happening. His doctor sees the same troubling symptoms we do but doesn’t know what else to do short of a battery of neurological testing (which my Dad is bafflingly against). Hard seeing the changes from day-to-day.

I tried multiple times to come up with a purely positive comment since there’s enough negativity out there, and these sort of situations is why I tend not to use any form of social media, but this is the best I can do.

You felt the need to comment about a situation you have literally zero knowledge of, about a psychiatrist you have zero knowledge of, and about my experience you also have zero knowledge of.

To have the difficulties (as defined in the DSMV-TR for the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum) in this society is inherently disabling and a struggle to navigate. Period, end of story. That I’m not on the ground crying and nonverbal 24/7 does not invalidate this. The internal struggles are the same. She, as well as too many others, invalidate the whole concept of Autism by falsely claiming everyone struggles with these things. That was the whole point. They don’t. If you do struggle with these things then ipso facto, you’re Autistic by definition.

As far as levels or “significant negative impact,” it’s subjective and best decided by those that are dealing with those negative impacts as to the severity of them.
