My brother in Amerigo Vespucci, there are maps from 500 years ago that show sea serpents on them. Are those real, too?

That’s a great one.

I had my first experience with a drive through AI order taker at Burger King. I wanted it to add bacon to a double cheeseburger. It said “ok” and if I hadn’t watched the screen I wouldn’t have noticed that it put a single cheeseburger and a Bacon Steakhouse Burger on the order.
It couldn’t have been more wrong if someone had programmed it deliberately to get stuff wrong.

Explain Like I'm Five•Explain Like I am a child ... taxes. I get you pay taxes on goods you buy everyday. And you get said goods by paying a one time fee. But how come on a home after being paid off I still pay taxes......English
6·2 days agoBecause we have to tax something. Taxes are for ongoing services. You have to keep paying them because roads keep getting potholes and kids keep being born and needing education.
Only taxing income, or sales, or payroll, or imports, or property, or capital gains, or whatever would disproportionately affect one population or another. Spreading out to multiple sources of taxation is an attempt (with mixed success) to make sure that everyone pitches in. Property taxes in particular (assuming a reasonable homestead deduction) are a good way to make sure that rich people pitch in.

That’s true. Honestly I remember being a kid, learning about the Soyuz recovery system and being shocked. A 20mph collision with the ground (without the braking SRs, 5mph with them) doesn’t sound like much, but it can still ring your bell pretty good.
In fairness, if you can throw a person at a person, one or both of those people are probably going to think twice about crossing you.
Or if they encounter space-bears before reentry

In the talk show they do, he talked about how even with the issues he loves Pop OS and even mentioned that very argument–that he has problems with Windows too, and at least this way one of those problems isn’t copilot.

Nothing is confirmed, but there’s some pretty compelling evidence.
The few people I’ve known who were on hormone therapy for whatever reason aren’t going to be setting any sports records. This is like asking who’s going to regulate the minimum amount of ankle weights a woman has to wear to not have an unfair advantage. Anyone who transitions in order to win a trophy is a particular idiot, and we should just leave people alone.
If you have to ask, you can’t afford it
My favorite geography fact is that, if you’re on the northern edge of Brazil, you’re actually closer to Canada than you are to the southern border of Brazil.

8·4 days agoActually, Jupiter doesn’t have a solid core the way you think! The gases just get so dense at the core that it starts to behave like a solid. You couldn’t, like, blow away all the clouds and have some rock to wander around on.

I don’t know…The gulf between the best male athlete and the best female athlete is so tiny compared to the gulf between the best male athlete and the worst male athlete, though.
Like…the women’s world record holder in the marathon set her record with a 2:09:56 in the Chicago Marathon in 2024. She would’ve come in 18th overall in last year’s Chicago Marathon. That’s not even 10 minutes behind the men’s world record holder, who set a 2:00:35 in the same race the previous year. Over the course of a two-hour race, that’s something like an 8% advantage that men hang on to–and that advantage has been cut in half over the last half-century.
Conversely, while of course it’s really hard to define the “world’s worst” male runner, a speedwalk marathon takes about 4 hours; so if you’re running at all, you’re basically guaranteed to be half as fast as the best women.
All of which means, a “failed” male athlete stands no chance against a woman. If you’re good enough that running against women might improve your chances of a win, you’re already an elite athlete; and since you’re willing to lie anyway if you’re considering transitioning just to win, then taking steroids or something and hoping you don’t get caught is way more likely to push you over the edge.
EDIT:
Maybe, but I think individual leagues and sporting groups should handle that if and when it becomes a problem.
