A right-wing law firm has threatened to sue North Carolina’s Wake County Public School system if it does not allow parents to opt their kids out of a class taught by a transgender teacher

The Thomas More Society — a prolific Christian nationalist litigator with a history of cases challenging marriage equality, abortion rights, and President Joe Biden’s election in 2020 – sent a letter to the school on September 15 with a list of demands and gave officials 15 days to implement them before it sues.

In addition to allowing parents to opt their kids out, the firm says the school must agree not to discipline students for using incorrect pronouns for the teacher in question and must agree that no employee can retaliate against a student who opts out of the class or other discussions of LGBTQ+ issues.

The firm argues that the school is legally obligated to provide these accommodations based in part on the Supreme Court ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, a 2025 decision that said schools must allow religious parents to opt their students out of classes containing LGBTQ+ content.

In a July 27 Facebook post, state Rep. Erin Paré ® said constituents had expressed concern to her “about the hiring of a transgender biological male, who dresses as a woman, music teacher, in one of our local elementary schools.”

Paré supported a bill last year to legally erase trans identities in the state and make it harder for doctors to provide gender-affirming care to youth. Lawmakers overrode Gov. Josh Stein’s (D) veto of the bill, and it took effect on January 1 of this year.

Paré is also currently running for reelection and has criticized her opponent for being a “Transgender Activist.” Her Facebook contains several posts blasting the “Trans Agenda” and “grown men wearing dresses.”

The story was then amplified by the anti-LGBTQ+ account Libs of TikTok, run by Chaya Raichik, who has repeatedly been identified as a stochastic terrorist.

But not everyone in the district is out for blood.

At an August school board meeting addressing the teacher controversy, supporters turned out en masse to defend her.

According to court records reviewed by WBUR, Joseph Kutzko was charged after his then-15-year-old child reported an incident at the family’s Southborough home in January 2025. A police report alleges that Kutzko punched the child in the shoulder with a closed fist and pulled the child’s hair several times.

The report also describes alleged threats, including an incident in which Kutzko allegedly raised a clenched fist and threatened to punch the child. It further states that he threatened to kill the child over not singing in tune during a birthday celebration. Kutzko pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The following day, the teenager went to a school counsellor, who contacted police. Joseph Kutzko was subsequently arrested.

The teenager, who is now 17, has also sought legal protection from their parents. According to the reporting, the child filed for a restraining order after nearly a year in DCF custody.

In 2014, the Conservative government of Stephen Harper passed Bill C-24, which allowed the government to revoke the citizenship of naturalized Canadians convicted of treason, terrorism charges or espionage, and who also received prison sentences of certain lengths for those offences after they became citizens.

Mark Kersten, an expert in human rights and international law at the University of the Fraser Valley, said revoking citizenship from Canadians who engage in the activities listed in CIJA’s filing after they are naturalized would be “hugely problematic,” especially if those individuals were deported from Canada before being criminally prosecuted in a Canadian court.

Abusive transphobic parents want to hurl horrific insults and assaults on trans kids, preventing them from eating, sleeping, studying and socialising then finally kicking them out the house underage while demanding that society never hold their actions accountable to the law.

The situation worsened when she came out as trans and was kicked out of the house. From 17 to 24, she was what she described as “on-and-off” homeless — often sleeping in her car or staying with friends. That made things worse. When she had to choose between buying food or putting gas in the car to have air conditioning in the summer heat, she chose gas every time.
