The old Steam Machine branding was more a set of guidelines / branded manufacturer specs for mini-PCs. Not many actually came out and yeah it got shut down pretty quickly. Though it was the origin of Steam OS / Big Picture Mode and what became Proton.

Fwiw, SearXNG is using a very similar engine to Kagi and you can host it yourself and tweak it if desired. There are also a bunch of public instances if you prefer that route.

You’re conflating two different definitions of “standard”. URLs are more human readable than IPs, but changing IPs into URLs would cost decades of manpower and break everything for basically no benefit either.

I mean sure it’s kind of a relic from the 90s, but so is the save icon. If you change it you’re breaking backwards compatibility with everything tangentially related to digital cameras prior to <current year>. A ‘photos’ folder might be more intuitive but then you run into the issue of “what about my language’s folder” instead of just everyone worldwide using DCIM.

Sometimes its better long term for people to learn about a standard instead of for the standard to be more intuitive to newcomers. Sure you could just make a new standard but that’s its own problem.

It’s a DCF thing, not a Windows thing. A bunch of Japanese companies collaborated on a spec in the 90s so most digital cameras would work vaguely the same as far as file storage went and it’s still the standard because it’s a naming convention and there’s not really a reason to change it.

In the US those’ve been almost universally replaced by 401k plans, which I assume is what they’re referring to.

Even if quantum computing turns out to actually be infeasible and classical cryptography is secure for the next millennia, it’s still a good feature to have a third independent encryption layer in the protocol. It makes it that much less likely reliant on the other two being bulletproof.

The Commonwealth Saga is so great.

The portals / train system brings the vibes of the commonwealth up to something like the EU, but on a multi-planetary scale. You have to go through specific points to get planet to planet but the infrastructure is so built up that it’s mostly a travel time problem. It becomes an issue later on that the society has gotten kind of hidebound into a gradual expansion so they never really ‘needed’ FTL for exploration, and now they do.

5G / anti-vax / etc. aren’t research movements, they’re justifications. Conspiracy “science” is not science, it’s (fairly fringe) religion attempting to use alternate language to appear more respectable.

Stuff like the Netflix / Folding Ideas documentaries on Flat Earthers are still interesting for showing the application of ideas and how critical thinking is useful and how rejecting proof because it doesn’t fit your hypothesis, instead of adjusting your hypothesis, is farcical when viewed outside the lens of belief.
