Canada@lemmy.ca•President Trump blames Canada for wildfire smoke, says he will add cost to tariffsEnglish
32·3 days agoDoes this POS really not understand still that US consumers pay the tariffs? Why the fuck would we pay extra for Canadian products and he thinks that it’s charging Canada? So sick of this moron. I’d really like to know who told him about tariffs in the first place because they really shouldn’t have. He thinks “ugh grumba mugga wunna punish country” and somehow that a tariff does that. What would it do - reduce Canadian exports? So what? Also note his instinct is to fine and punish Canada, not offer help. What a shitbag.

Dullsters@dullsters.net•Not my fault every single coffee shop is closed todayEnglish
1·4 days agoI pretty much hate holidays. Places are either closed all day, close early, or are packed, and a holiday does nothing for me at all.
What I find offensive and startling is when platforms accuse you of “encouraging violence” when you didn’t. That even happened to me on Twitter (pre musk!) regarding Trump, and their system is you have to basically admit you did it and delete the comment to use your account again. So I was like wtf, in order to proceed, I have to basically admit I made a threat against the president? When I DIDN’T? All I said was I thought he’d be too old and unhealthy to run in 2020. More recently I said Elron Musk hates poor people and basically wants them to die, and Reddit said the same thing, that was “wishing harm or violence” on someone. I hate this AI moderation bullshit. It was a 3 day ban but I deleted my account and haven’t been back.

81·5 days agoI prefer that to the sun going down at 4:30. It’s always annoyed me that just when it’s really noticeable that the sun is going down much earlier, around 5:30-6:00, we change the clocks to make it even worse.
I mean, fuck reddit. A lot of individual subs are horrible, and the site as a whole is awful. If you want to stay at it, I’m sure there’s somewhere where you can post the same content. If not, great

No Stupid Questions•Is it even possible to drop 20 lbs in a month? Are there any diets for people who want to go to the extreme? Kind of like celebs do for roles?English
11·5 days agoSure, I lost 28 lbs in one month when I was first developing type 1 diabetes.
Other than that, you might want to do calorie calculations. Exercise is great, but it takes a surprising amount of work to counter a given amount of calories. I’ve been tracking my walking with an app that estimates calories, and 4-5 miles is just getting started. I’ve been walking 6-10 miles a day. The app and online sources say 5 miles burns ~500 calories, which is 2-3 beers depending on the type. So exercise like that might be able to stave off weight gain, but it’s unlikely to result in weight reduction. You’d likely want to analyze your diet and cut out any calories over what is medically necessary. Burning more than what you take in results in weight loss. Just be sure you’re covering the basic macros, especially protein, and getting enough electrolytes and vitamins.

Technology•You paid me, a long-time Linux user, to use Windows 11 exclusively for a month: here’s how it wentEnglish
1·8 days agoSeems kind of drastic. In my experience, most people who have a problem with MacOS are simply not devoting enough effort to learning to use it. I was used to switching between Windows and every single desktop environment and window manager imaginable for Linux so using a Mac has never been remotely difficult or stressful for me. It’s a hell of a lot more familiar than Windows given that it has a real terminal.

3·9 days agoNot quite. They’ve tried to adapt some iOS stuff to Mac now that iOS is by farther bigger operating system, but Max are at the core Unix, and you can access everything. You have a zsh shell and can do whatever you want with it. For instance if you get sick of the music app opening, just go remove the x flag from the executable. Can’t do that on an iPad. It’s really quite a capable desktop operating system and after using Linux for 15 years, I decided that I was tired of spending six days a year trying to configure my sound card and I’ve been pretty happy with a MacBook.

Technology•You paid me, a long-time Linux user, to use Windows 11 exclusively for a month: here’s how it wentEnglish
3·9 days agoI spent about a decade and a half using solely Linux, and one thing I really appreciate is that if a particular distro or upgrade had some behavior I didn’t like, I could just switch to a different desktop or window manager. I went back and forth between gnome, windowmaker, KDE, LXDE and so on many times.

7·10 days agoThe scroll thing is annoying. I like the “natural” scroll on a touchpad but not a mouse also.
The multi desktop is the same as on Windows and Linux… I don’t use it on any system. I like how MacOS handles fullscreen apps better than either of those.
You can disable the startup sound very easily: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102230
I have only used mirroring to external monitor and not extending a desktop, so I don’t know. As far as maximization I personally hate windows expanding when I move them to the top of the screen. It’s rarely what I want so I turn it off. If I want to maximize it, I hit the green button.
You uninstall Apps by dragging their folder from the Applications folder to the trash can.
Closing the window and leaving the application running is how MacOS has worked forever for some Steve Jobs reason. I am used to hitting Cmd-Q.
The folder stuff can be weird. The way the Desktop icons work is one of the worst aspects, thigh they kind of fixed that (using expanding smart folders or whatever used to be chaos if they had a lot of items in them).
You can check the usage of a Volume from right clicking it in Finder and choosing Get Info. Or just df -h
