Maybe it’s because “Shut up and sit on the bench for 90% of the season” doesn’t roll off the tongue /s

Sorry, kickers, you have the lamest position in the lamest mainstream sport. You kick and then sit down. Why anyone would think a random kicker of all players is worthy of giving a commencement speech is beyond me.

Kicker is the number two job on an NFL team I would want unless fired head coach counts. As long as you aren’t total ass you can do it pretty well for a long time. Hell, Butkers own head coach said much earlier in his career stated that the only time he speaks to his kicker about anything is when they show up to spring practice he checks out their butt and says “well your caboose is still big so we’ll see you again next year”.

It doesn’t take the mind of a Peyton Manning & Richard Sherman or the freak athleticism of Tyreek Hill and Randy Moss to be a great kicker which, not saying Butker is a scrub at kicking because that’s probably hyperbole but he’s not Adam Vinitari either. Additionally there’s virtually zero chance that his life experience is something recent grabs could build off, like maybe someone like Alex Smith or Nick Chubb who overcame extremely significant injuries to play at the highest level again could be.

I would bet his agent was asked by some school board member that campaigns on “family values” and didn’t think anyone would question someone from the latest superbowl winner. So fucking stupid
