For me it doesn’t really “fix” anything that I can notice. All my games and software work fine in x11, video works fine. It may be a giant convoluted beast from the 1980s, but damn if they didn’t do a good job of keeping it running well on modern machines.

That’s primarily where the issue with x11 is. It’s an unwieldy piece of software with a bunch of functionality which isn’t really used, but still has to be maintained. And there really isn’t the resources to do so.
In waylands case it is a specification, which focuses only on display, and provides modularity.
