A study has found that waste from the global apparel industry is leaking millions of tons of plastic into the environment each year—an overlooked pollution source which may be getting worse over time.
People buy what’s cheapest. Some because they want, a lot because they have to.
Unless you ban plastic clothes or add extra taxes on plastic and therefore provide a cheaper alternative, nothing is going to happen.
Mendable and long lasting clothing needs a firm hand from policy, which can be a nettlesome issue because the concept of “fast fashion” is at the heart of the issue. Textiles produced per capita have skyrocketed, and synthetic clothes fall apart sooner and many can’t be mended as easily as traditional textiles, which leads to overconsumption and waste (i.e. “profit”). The synthetic clothes can’t be fixed and break down fast. Even nicer clothes break down faster than they should these days. Any legislative agenda to amend it would need to address repairability and durability and have serious teeth - but more to the point, it’s an aspect of capitalism that has lacked rails for so long that saying it’s gone off the rails barely makes sense.
None of this comment is stopping people from changing their consumption habits today though
These are not mutually exclusive but one of them can change something today, the other one requires state to pass pro consumer laws which is impossible under the current regime.
So you are essentially advocating people do nothing instead of you know, fix their own shiti consumption habits.
You don’t need 30 garmets per person per year… no matter how shiti the clothes are.
