        Boiling the jug and pouring a bit of hot water on the cylinder seems like it’d be less work than digging out the Wii fit gear, unless of course they use it more regularly rather than just for weighing gas bottles.

            You pour a bit of boiling water down the side of the cylinder then run your hand down where you poured the water - you will feel a clear delineation in the temperature of the cylinder at the level of the liquid gas inside.

            The method described reveals the level of liquid within the container. There is a distinct difference above and below.

          They usually come with a tare (empty) weight stamped on them. Total weight minus the weight = gas weight

          It doesn’t need to be super accurate, just enough to tell them if they’ll need to get a new one soon or not. They could probably just pick it up and guess, but at least this gives them a number to track.

          My grill literally has a gauge that works off the weight of the tank. I think it’s prolly accurate enough. Propane tanks are mass produced to fairly rigorous specs, as they have to contain pressure for safety.
