I never liked the guy. I’m not smarter than the average person. I just grew up around folksy, phobic fascists like him, and saw right through his paper thin veneer. I think the subset of liberals who embraced him for 30 seconds simply heard what they wanted to hear and saw what they wanted to see. It happens. Politicians con people all the time.
