Maybe? It passed with strong bipartisan support so there’s a good chance. Probably not the wedge issue you’re hoping it is.

Jeff is my rep and I think he’s represented my district incredibly well, he’s the only politician I’ve ever been excited to vote for. He’s also former military and is on an armed forces committee as well as science, space, and technology. I would guess that his vote for a TikTok ban was along the lines of the military’s suggestion that it is a serious security concern. Likewise the bill had 155 Dems and 197 GOP votes, so I’d hardly call it a party betrayal

voting hand in hand with that many self-serving people is not evidence of doing the right thing.

Does your disdain for the TikTok ban extend to the recent ban on Kaspersky?

Wondering if people really just care about memes more than national security.

I don’t know, were there dozens of American companies doing the exact same thing as Kaspersky but not receiving any penalty?

I think there are a few that unknowingly provide data to hostile nations. Only one that I’m aware of did so with intent.

Edit: but we’re in agreement, all of them should have their pp slapped

so using YouTube and Facebook and Instagram to decry tiktok makes him a hypocrite. which is what I was driving at

“you can only do that if you’re American” isn’t patriotic

              how so?

Sen Jackson’s usage of TikTok doesn’t necessarily make him a supporter of the platform. (See: people’s continued usage of X in spite of its terrible decisions)

I don’t mean just using the platforms, I mean aiming legislation at the one foreign company that’s doing the exact same thing as all the other companies. acting like we can trust capitalists with our data because they’re American but we can’t trust anybody else with it because they’re not, even though the American capitalists will sell it directly to the same organizations, is pretty weird
