Because, sadly, for a long time in the US it was very, very relevant, and there’s a not-inconsiderable subset of our population that wants it to continue to be relevant. Hell, it took until 1995 for mixed-race marriages to gain majority acceptance.
Believe me, the sane ones in this country really wish race didn’t matter.
But time was, the majority of white women would never have dreamed of showing support for a person of color, much less a woman of color.
