You joke, but this was very real for a lot of women (not the rat poison part) not that long ago. This used to be people’s lot in life: to serve men. You were allowed to have your own ambitions, so long as they related to homemaking.
It’s disgusting.
The millennial generation is probably the first generation of women who are truly reaping the rewards of feminism. This doesn’t mean Millenial women don’t face some of the same challenges their grandmothers did, but rather that more doors are open. Women are scientists, politicians, welders, and the list goes on. They can truly chase their dreams, rather than have the kitchen timer go off and ruin them.
Every mentor I’ve had that was worth a damn was a woman. I am a better man for all of their insight.
I got 6 pages into the first draft before I realised I wasn’t writing horror, just a really sad story about a wife in an abusive relationship, so I shelved it :)
Can you even imagine?
Can you?
Can you even imagine not having to leave the kitchen?
Can you imagine never leaving the kitchen?
Can you never leave the kitchen?
The pork chops aren’t burnt.
You haven’t left the kitchen.
The pudding is asking for a foot rub.
You can’t leave the kitchen.
Your husband beats you and you can’t do anything about it because of systemic misogyny.
Imagine never having to leave the kitchen.
Don’t leave the kitchen.
The pudding and chops need you.
Your children are upset.
Don’t leave the kitchen.
The phone is ringing.
It’s 30 years later.
You never left the kitchen.
The pudding is laced with strychnine.
The children have moved out.
Your husband’s lips are blue.
The neighbors are beginning to ask questions.
You can hear them on the phone.
They whisper.
The phone is ringing.
It’s the pudding.
You can’t leave the kitchen.
Can you even imagine?
Leaving the kitchen?
There is only one way out.
The pudding is calling you.
Eat the pudding.
Oooh! Butterscotch!

I now have an irrational fear of genius loci kitchens because of this comment, it reads like something out of the script of “1408”, so thanks for that
Oh god. I’m gonna write a horror short story about the guardian spirit of 1960s housewives.
I’d read it
