As the Fediverse continues to grow, people are looking to build new experiences that change what’s possible on the network today.

Flohmarkt is a nascent project intended for selling personal items, and may be the first attempt of its kind here.

I don’t think the “decentralize and federate everything” strategy is a good idea when it comes to online marketplaces.

We’ve seen how quickly bad actors can wreak havoc on the Fediverse like that one time when Lemmy Shitpost was closed for weeks due to people creating new instances of their own and spamming the community with CSAM. Imagine how much you open the community up to scams or criminal activity when money gets involved.

I mean if there’s a time to test it out, it’s right now I would argue.

Lemmy is still small enough to test those things.

It will probably split and congregate around instances focusing on heavy moderation and KYC vs crypto-focused free-for-all ones if they ever gain traction.

I believe money shouldn’t be involved.

Just match sellers and buyers together and let them figure the terms and transaction out themselves.

All that is needed is a way to find what you want and a solid system of building trusted profiles with ratings and such.

Not a simple task, but keep the money out and it will all be easier.

Wouldn’t the second part require a trusted means to verify that a given profile actually sold you the promised thing, as well as some trusted means (two-party signing, maybe) to announce that a payment actually took place?
