Probably pretty unlikely, as there’s a lot of improvements left to do for image editing. I’d imagine animation tooling is a very low priority since other tools built for this purpose handle it better than is possible without lots of work.
Out of interest, how do you export your animation?
Do other tools really exist, though? I do some animation in Blender, but the only real image editor I have access to with a timeline is pirated Photoshop which I hate using because their interface is garbo. There exist several industry-use programs like ToonBoom or Clip Studio Paint EX for hundreds of dollars.
I just would feel most comfortable animating in GIMP tbh. If they announced it was in the works I could probably even pitch in a donation to help it along.
