Here I got 8 down against 16 up, for explaining my rationale in an asklemmy thread about the subject. It’s a snapshot of how the users seeing a post or comment feel about things. How many you get total is just an indicator of user volume, but the ratio is useful as a datapoint.
Votes can tell you lots.
