Your comment made me curious about this. I did some quick searching and found that face masks as a way to prevent disease transmission was first introduced in 1897 (at least in the West). Honestly, that is later than I would have thought. Microorganisms were first directly observed in the late 1600’s, so it took quite some time to connect the dots on that one.
As an aside, as somebody that has done a ton of microscopy in my career, the Leeuwenhoek Microscope is an absolute feat of engineering for its day. Just some phenomenal skill to be able to create lenses that small and high quality.
