I remember an npr bit on this woman who was instrumental in the modern form of cattle execution and it was because she could not stand the suffering so made it as nice as she could.

Regardless of that, the process is still not nice at all. Even the most effective penetrating bolt stunners sometimes require a second shot because some small percentage of cattle can show signs of return of sensibility on the bleed rails.

Based on multiple news stories over the years, it is clear that many of these plants and the people who work at them do not really care much about the suffering of these animals. I strongly believe that these percentages are much higher when researchers are not present and monitoring the process because overworked employess will be more careless about stunner maintenance and positioning. I’m willing to bet that some substantial number of the 90,000 cattle slaughtered in the USA every day wake up as they are disassembled.

I mean im not even sure if they are doing what she came up with years ago. It was just sorta a strange story because the individual hated it but knew she could not stop it so tried to get this change in how it was done. It was an interesting piece and I can get why she decided to take that action, but yeah I doubt the typical person in the industry feels like she did. I mean the industry would fall apart if that was the case.
