For me, it always boils down to this: if people are greedy and selfish, how do we create and maintain a system of laws that protects us from our own worst impulses? Is it even possible?

ARE people inherently greedy and selfish, or is that just a cynical, false belief that‘s meant to keep us distrustful of one another, and therefore weak?

I don’t think all humans are the same. I’ve known people who won’t take help. Starving, broke, facing homelessness. They won’t take help.

Then I’ve known people who view life as a challenge on how to scam the system in as many times as they can while technically not breaking any rules…but still real shady shit.

And then there’s people who don’t give a shit about other people, or rules, or how they affect others. They’ll straight up steal.

And there’s everybody at all points in the spectrum in between.
