I started reading this book by Gabor Maté, a doctor who has ADHD. In just the first chapter, I felt seen in a way that I have never experienced with any therapist or psychiatrist I have consulted in almost 47 years.

I liked it but I also felt it was a bit outdated. I’ve gone back to it a couple times but during that, admittedly scattered, time I finished Taking Charge of Adult ADHD by Dr. Barkley and then recently started How to ADHD by Jessica McCabe.

I’ll admit my opinion/openness to the book changed after I learned how effective and well-researched medication is and noticed he mentions a few times in the first few chapters how he doesn’t seem to believe the science or just disregards it.

Note: Just checked and realized Dr. Barkley’s book first came out only a year after Dr. Mate’s so I guess they’re originally not that far apart.
