Bathing is important for all animals! We caught Newton towards the end of his bath, and I hope you enjoy this short video of him getting squeaky clean!

Did you know that many animals have their own unique bathing rituals? Birds like Newton use a special oil from a gland on their backs to preen their feathers, keeping them smooth and clean. Some birds take water baths, while others prefer dust baths. Even clever ravens and crows use ants to keep their feathers parasite-free! Cats, big and small, have amazing scratchy tongues with tiny, hook-like spines that help them groom their fur and stay cool. And let’s not forget about our furry friends-the classic “wet dog shake” helps dogs get rid of 70% of the water after a bath! Even honeybees have their own grooming routine, cleaning off pollen while they fly!

Some animals even get a little dirty on purpose to camouflage themselves or to attract attention for grooming from others. Capuchin monkeys are known for their unique anointing rituals where they use strong- smelling substances like limes and onions, along with ants and millipedes to bathe with.

So, next time you wish you could skip the bath, remember: a quick shower is way easier than letting birds peck at your skin!

I never tried making an animated webp before and didn’t know it was a thing either. Sometimes when I upscale images I save in webp just to save conversion time uploading them here, and I noticed it on the video to gif converter I use and figured I’d give it a try.

I have the Vimeo account now to put videos, but I hate I can’t thumbnail them here, so I still wanted an animated picture. I forget if I noticed a difference in file size. I think there is a 15 or 20MB limit for uploads on World, so that’s a frequent issue doing a conversion that keeps the frame rate up to make a decent substitute for video.

Newton is a fun little owl and they post a number of videos, usually him chilling in reusable shipping bags.

Ah, nice! That tool looks real good, with some fairly hefty file-size throughputs. Maybe I can find a use for it, one day.

Btw, are you happy with your upscale tools? I typically use http://waifu2x.udp.jp/ or BigJpg.com, but sometimes better AI is called for.

Holy moly, that seems like a lot for uploaded files for a big, popular instance. oO Over here, my instance has something like 10 servers and a US$200/mo bill, but only accepts uploads to 500k, and not only that, but they seem to display a bit pokily.

I use PhotoEnlarger and have been happy with it. I don’t notice any difference in quality, even with some large scaling. It shows a comparison of a few algorithms where you can zoom on details to see what you like. You can then crop off desired and save to jpg/webp/png.

I don’t see many people really sucking up the storage like I do. If I’m ever the first person to get a warning, it wouldn’t surprise me.

          Hey, thanks again. ^^

Hmm, I suppose I should consider uploading somewhere to LW when I want to do more ‘image roundup’ posts. Indeed, I’m still pondering what to do in the wake of Imgur casually wiping a bunch of my posts as recently as 6mos ago.

Like you, I’m largely a ‘one-man show,’ and don’t have nearly the time and energy to be reconstructing ~200 posts that were once Imgur-hosted. :S
