Here’s an explanation, can’t really give you a good TL;DR - I have to admit that the exact mechanisms are beyond me, and I feel like if I try to give a good summary, I’d get things wrong.

I guess a short ELI5 would be “the graphics card can’t do this and if you try you’ll get visual artifacts so instead we didn’t try to do this and we did it with the artifacts”. Classic demo scene hack taken to another level.
