On this regards, I think that the french doctrine since De Gaulle is right. US never protected Europe but their own interest (in Europe) (and to be fair, you could say the same about any country).
And indeed, I’ve been hearing all my life about the need for an European army, and nothing as really moved, and it’s a pitty.
I meant it more in the context of how far we still have to go. There are more and growing cooperative projects, but it is still a long road to an EU army.

That is not quite correct as the dutch forces are fully integrated into the german Bundeswehr’s command structure.
Yes, it’s not a whole lot but it shows some progress around the corner.
Yes their land forces, their Navy has a shared command with the Belgian Navy.
It IS a whole lot and a very strong sign of trust that had to be earned.
The military is one of the most intimate things of a nation and what happened here is a very good sign that hopefully sets an example for others.
