    It starts with us.

I came here to get away from censorship, not join it. We need places for open discussion but I’m starting to see that this isn’t it either.

This was an opportunity to actually have a discussion about the topic and reinforce virtues of freedom, but it is doing the opposite and illustrating the descent to authoritarianism.

Removing CSAM is censorship. Removing hatespeech is censorship. What you call censorship is just moderation, and it’s necessary.

Libertarian free speech is a pipe dream, and trying to implement it always ends up giving a platform to bad actors like Nazis and child predators. Nobody here wants to recreate 4chan and 8chan except people who have an agenda.

OP appeared to break the rules and then followed up in that same community with a snarky jab at the moderators, rather than having a discussion with the mods like an adult.

Here. Witness the definitely earnest questions from OP that the mean ol’ moderators removed. /s

They’re intentionally hiding that bit, because they don’t want you to have a full picture of what they did and why they’re now spamming as many communities as possible to get sympathy.

I agree he wasn’t acting in good faith, but I’m more concerned with any would-be censorship than a silly troll. The moderator actually reached out to me and explained the scenario, and pointed out that they actually left one of their duplicate posts up.

I’m pretty happy with how the particular situation has gone down, but I do still stand by my initial comments and my principles on censorship.

Mods handled it appropriately and sealion is an idiot, misrepresenting the scenario. but that was a given.

Fine, start your own place for all the questions you want.
Which you can do here. Unlike in an authoritarian system.

We used to say the same thing about the internet as a whole, and then the big tech companies crowded out all the smaller options, started controlling narratives and we ended up where we are at now.

I don’t want to see the same thing happen with Lemmy instances. We are on the ground floor.

I get that, but this isn’t yours to control. So if you want to change the rules (which that instance shows in the sidebar and which the mod showed how op broke two different rules in one of the many replica offended posts this sealion made after getting a comment deleted), make your own instance and don’t force it on everyone else.

Yep, that’s part of my point.

I’ve already blocked the community over this. Know any alternatives?

Just want to make sure I understand, you blocked a community because they removed a post that broke their rules?

Yes. I disagree with their rules and their enforcement of them, and this exposed that. So I wont participate in it.

What else would you have me do in that scenario?

It’s not like I pour over each community’s rules before reading any content that surfaces from them.

Because as the mod that removed the post, I’d like to give you my perspective if you’ll let me.

                  • OP made a post that seemed to break rule 5 (we had multiple reports on it), and did not seem like a good-faith question breaking rule 1, so I removed the post
                  • OP then makes a second post being fairly passive towards me, further showing that they were not posting in good-faith. So once again, removed the post for rule 1 and 5, messaged OP as well explaining this. This could have been a temp ban, I was being nice here, and reaching out to give OP the chance to explain they were not posting in bad faith.
                  • OP then posts 13 times about the above in other communities, breaking some of the rules in those communities.

As mods it’s mayhem if you don’t enforce your rules, which is all I was trying to do, we have each rule to keep the community from getting out of control and offtopic. If we had no rules, the community would be filled with a bunch of trolls and offtopic posts.

IMO OP has proved multiple times now that their question was not in good-faith, and they were seeking out arguments (check their other comments) and drama (see the 13 posts).

Icing on the cake: we left their rephrased question up to avoid more of this drama, OP still kept posting the screenshots.

Thanks for taking the time to break it down.

I agree that he isn’t acting in good faith, but silencing the discussion is (would be) the bigger issue to me than some silly troll.

I really appreciate your response and reasoning. I don’t have an issue with logistical moderation (e.g. duplicate threads) but I’m extremely adverse to moderation of actual topics for what should be obvious reasons.

Given that you left the other thread up, I think I can put away the pitchfork for now. I’ll have a look at your rules, and hopefully find myself satisfied and participating in your community.

I didn’t break any of their rules. They just selectively chose to decide i was trolling when I was actually getting trolled in the thread.

Don’t care. I don’t care about your sealioning either.

It is my view that some things should be dealt with through downvotes and discussion, not moderation. Especially when we are talking about authoritarianism of all fucking things.

Moderation in my view is an extreme measure that shouldn’t be enacted lightly. And I only want to participate in communities that share that view.
