The allergy, called alpha-gal syndrome, came to light a little over a decade ago.

If you go camping frequently you’ve probably noticed that more people are going outside than ever before.

Among newer hikers and campers I’ve noticed that insect repellent just gets treated like sunscreen: people kind of ignore it or spray it on the obvious spots and don’t bother with the rest.

Also, don’t even get me started on those “all natural” insect repellents.

It’s really just education. No one takes it seriously.

I agree about the all natural repelants. Deet is the only product that’s been proven to be effective but even that is far from 100%. Not that I’m advising against using repellent but I don’t think you can count on it.

For ticks you’re better protected wearing long pants, sleeves and a hat when moving through wooded areas, brush, or tall grass but good luck convincing people to do that.

Isn’t picaridin also shown to be effective? Or is that only against mosquitos and not ticks?

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it to be honest but it sounds awesome. I’ll definitely be trying it out.
