well my interpretation is that it’s for situations like what happened last season with Rashford (or Weghorst) for example, attacker is in offside position, defender makes a move for the ball, but deflects it perfectly for the offside attacker who scores (can’t find a replay unfortunately)

in that particular instance the defender clearly moved his leg towards the ball, attempting to kick it away

now based on what’s written article

A ‘deliberate play’ is when a player has control of the ball and with the possibility of:

    • Passing the ball to a team-mate; or
    • Gaining possession of the ball; or
    • Clearing the ball (e.g., by kicking or heading it)

If a player is considered to be in control of the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance, this would be a ‘deliberate play’ and the attacker in an offside position should not be penalised for offside. An inaccurate or unsuccessful action does not change the fact that the defender ‘deliberately played’ the ball.

my interpretation is that now these situations will not be judged as offside.

mainly due to the 3rd point

managed to find the replay after all,

defender makes an attempt to kick away the ball, itt goes up for Weghorst who is offside, heads it down to Rashford who scores

based on what I am reading I think this would not be disallowed under the new rules
