I think the table top material and the support/frame is what is going to make a difference. For example if the table you have now had more support than just four legs (along with the draws on one side) it may not have sagged for a longer time, if at all. We’ve bought a range of items from IKEA (who hasn’t) on a budget but for items like tables we’ve stuck to those that have good support and are made from ‘nicer’ material like bamboo, wood etc.

I don’t have experience with standing desks because the ones that look like they will last are a bit pricey and are quite big (we’re in a small flat).

Do you have a budget, space and other requirements to consider? Seeing how quiet the sydney community can be I’m wondering if there is another aussie.zone community you can also poke for advice.

Budget wise I’m ok going for pricey as I need it for work. Fully WFH these days so a good desk is worth it. I need a desk that fits 2 27-32 inch monitors + peripherals. Currently our rental is spacious so I can fit in a large desk, although we’re looking to buy property in the next year or two so it might be an issue then.

There are so many standing desk options my head is already spinning. I noticed that many places like omnidesk, updown, zen have ‘sales’ on at the moment. I don’t know if any of them offer anything like the 10 year guarantee IKEA offer on some of their standing desks (at least that’s what I think I read). I also couldn’t work out if any of the IKEA standing desks come with a solid timber top after going through all the filters. Best bet would be to pop in and chat to someone in the office section if you go the IKEA route.

I feel like they’re those stores that just have a perpetual sales on. Ikea might be a better choice cos at least I can go in and see it in person. The others don’t have a showroom in Sydney so I can’t really test/view it before purchasing. Thanks!

Reading through the link for the desk you purchased, it’s all plastic and particleboard. Definitely on the lower end materials wise.

I have an old Ikea modular desk setup, it’s survived close to 20 years I think? Similar to this https://www.ikea.com/au/en/cat/bekant-office-desks-18962/ but back then you could get addons to give you a bit of extra desk space on ends.

If you can afford it, go for a metal or hardwood frame with wood top (not particleboard). Will last decades.

Thank you! Yeah I wasn’t paying much attention to the materials when I purchased mine. I bought it because of the pandemic and had to start working from home so I just focused on size to fit external monitors.
