Will there be a pro version without in-app purchase like there was before? If I could avoid the in-app purchase I’d prefer it. There where weekly threads on Reddit when the in-app version failed to work correctly and I never had any problem with the pro version.

Not planning to. Last year Sync for Reddit had issues with Google as they’re clamping down on apps that are similar from the same developer.

Does that mean there’s only going to be a subscription based “pro” version?

I was a Pro user on reddit, but I’m not really interested in yet another subscription, even though I understand that may be financially attractive for you. I’d be happy to make a one-time purchase, though.

It’ll be the same pricing model. Ultra is a subscription, pro is lifetime. It’ll just be an in-app purchase now.

Makes sense if that’s the case. Thanks.

OK, that’s good. I was kinda worried that subscription would be the only option.

Will Pro become available as IAP, though? I’d maybe specify this. I did read this whole thread as if Pro was cancelled altogether.

Can you do a separate app that acts like a licence key, they way apps like FX Explorer does it? Or does that have the same (or other) issue?

I’m in support of a separate pro version of the app. As a compromise, this could work, too. Though, I would prefer an app without any ad libraries whatsoever.

Why do you think this is? Are they pushing for IAPs instead of pro/lite versions of apps? Do you think this is a good or bad move?

Not really sure. Took over a month to resolve last time though

Guess the other issue is that IAP bypasses family library so each member of your family group needs to cough up.

What was the point of having two different versions anyways instead of having one with an IAP?

The in-app purchases can be buggy with amnesia hitting them once a while, making you install/reinstall just so google remembers you purchased pro. This happens when you have more than 1 google accounts on android.

Another reason may have been due to the in app purchase stuffing up sometimes. I believe it was a Google thing, but iirc sometimes it would just forget you’d bought pro within the app and start showing ads again.

Other than the already mentioned points, the old Sync Pro and Sync Dev didn’t include the ad libraries in the app. Sync Dev was on beta track by default IIRC and had an internal test group like the current 100 limited users testing group Sync for Lemmy has.

I remember gravity box had a Paypal donation link and pro would be unlocked with your payment code. Not sure if Google Play allows this as it bypasses their 30%

Donation links are a violation of Google’s T&C and will get an app banned.

How does it work for apps that are a part of other services?

Say a company has an app available to all customers that pay for some unrelated service, it would be weird to require them to do the transaction over Google Play?

In that case the company could make the app free, but it wouldn’t be useable for anyone who didn’t own the base service, I guess.

And users who’d want to subscribe to the base service must then be able to do so through the app, that’s part of Google’s requirements.
