DETROIT – A former Michigan pastor has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of a transgender woman nearly five years ago, authorities announced.

Kelly Stough, 36, of Detroit, was shot to death around 6 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2018, in Detroit. Her body was discovered by a Detroit Police officer. Albert Weathers, then-46, of Sterling Heights, was charged with open murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony on Dec. 10, 2018.

Weathers initially claimed he was acting in self-defense and his gun went off by mistake. He said Stough got in his vehicle and demanded money. Stough died from a gunshot wound to the left underarm.

The prosecutor’s office alleged that Weathers knew the victim and the crime took place in an area known to be frequented by sex workers.

It’s often a safe assumption that unless evidence says otherwise a man murdering a trans woman he doesn’t know is in some way using her for sex before killing her
