Madeleine Riffaud (1924-2024) was a French Resistance fighter, poet, journalist and war correspondent. After active resistance to the German occupation of France during WWII, she reported for the communist newspaper “L’Humanité” and other left-wing publications on the Algerian War (during which she survived an assassination attempt) and on the French & American wars in Vietnam. Her reporting on Vietnam was informed by four years she spent in the North in the early 1950s, and in the 1960s by the connections she developed in the South with the Viet Cong. –WP
“Madeleine, Résistante,” ( Madeleine, Resistance Fighter ) is a series that’s been running since 2021, which co-writer Jean-David Morvan somewhat compares to Tintin(!) Tome four “L’ange exterminateur” ( Exterminating Angel ) is set to be released later this month, Oct 24th, '25.

Anyway, it looks really good from where I’m sitting. At this point I feel like I’ve already read a load of BD about WWII from almost every POV imaginable*, but I can’t remember reading a really in-depth look at a resistance fighter, before. So then, I have the first book queued up, and will inevitably get to it at some point. Will let y’all know if I like it!

* Such as “Once Upon a Time in France” ( Il était une fois en France ), an absolute masterpiece of a BD, not to be missed, about a Schindler-like wheeler-dealer who decided to stick it out in Paris. He made himself indispensable to high-ranking Nazis in the area, and therefore bought himself a sort of fleeting grace, even as a plainly-Jewish individual.

I love that art style.
