Sucks for Beehaw to have that happen to their community, defederation also sucks for everybody… especially for a large instance like Beehaw. The choice of server does seem to matter to both users who sign up and communities who wish to participate (and possibly push the rules of any server to their limit).
It looks like everyone’s being adults on this matter though, and defederation seems like a good solution to the problems the Beehaw community is facing right now. But it is not quite like how Lemmy was “sold” however as a happy-go-lucky federation.
Lemmy (and the fediverse) are going to have a HUGE influx of people with this #RedditBlackout, and we can expect plenty of misunderstandings (and drama) from people when this happens. There are buttons and concepts that people don’t understand, and everyone will get confused by this and get rather dramatic about it.
With regards to the former /r/RealTesla community and [email protected], the Beehaw instance was never an option for us to begin with because they closed the ability to make new communities. Their communities were nicely moderated and active, but they have their server to take care of. I expect most of the Fediverse to remain compatible with lemmy.world (and therefore accessible to [email protected]). So making this community (or test community) here on lemmy.world was the right move, even in retrospect.
Initial hot-take on the Beehaw drama.
