On the contrary, Durov is right here. Don’t let the team name on the western leader fool you. Age restrictions are the trojan horse to bring ai behind the walls of liberal democracy, it identify every account on every ip with an ID card, and a likeness, and have ai sort everything they have done, said, or looked at through half baked ai threat detection, owned by the likes of Peter Thiel and his ilk at that, to give us secret social scores that will affect everything about us in a way we will never be able to know let alone challenge.
People in the west are so much dumber now than even before, I swear, something new must be dosing us, affecting our fear centers, inhibiting the part of the brain that guards against predators, and not just the taxoplasmosis we never got diagnosed and cured either. But that too for up to 30 percent of the population.
No this is some 1984 style pollutant systematically dosing us to make us compliant, because the past year and a half shows a western population surrendering freedom on every score without a fight, more often than not because it’s “our” guy surrendering us, looking at you UK,
This is nothing more than surrendering their populations to tech, not the other way around, but to protect the kids, and because Elon’s dumbass is mentioned in the next paragraph, we take sides with the government looking to identify everyone with everything they do in databases they, and billionaires, and other groups, will all be able to access.
I accept the concerns about age verification, I personally share them myself. But please do not say that Durov is right.
Just some excerpts from his message (i leave out number one, which is about the age verification)
Personal and criminal liability for platform executives: If “illegal, hateful, or harmful” content isn’t removed fast enough, bosses face jail.
⚠️ Danger: This will force over-censorship—platforms will delete anything remotely controversial to avoid risks, silencing political dissent, journalism, and everyday opinions. Your voice could be next if it challenges the status quo.
Telegram is used by organized crime, sex criminals, terrorists and by intelligence to recruit throw-away agents to execute attacks on european infrastructure. If you as a private person provide any resources to anyone doing this, you go to jail. Why do all the tech oligarchs like Durov don’t go to jail? Telegram is not end-to-end-encrypted by default and all the messages are plain-text readable for Telegram, they have all the means to prevent this, but they decide they won’t. This makes them, and Pavel Durov personally, complicit in these crimes.
Criminalizing algorithm amplification: Amplifying “harmful” content via algorithms becomes a crime.
⚠️ Danger: Governments will dictate what you see, burying opposing views and creating echo chambers controlled by the state. Free exploration of ideas? Gone—replaced by curated propaganda.
In contrast to the corporate propaganda which the platforms promote now. Currently the tech oligarchs promote what people see on those platforms.
“Hate and polarization footprint” tracking: Platforms must monitor and report how they “fuel division.”
⚠️ Danger: Vague definitions of “hate” could label criticism of the government as divisive, leading to shutdowns or fines. This can be a tool for suppressing opposition.
Again: Currently Pavel Durov, Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai define what is hate, how is this any better than the government doing it, which is elected in most of Europe, in contrast to the Oligarchs which have no legitimacy.
I am in no way saying that government propaganda is good, but Durov is plain dishonest in his message. He has like one debatable point, the rest is oligarch and corporate propaganda.
You make good points, I mean he is right in that there is a concerted worldwide effort to lock down the internet, and filter it through new ai tools, threat detection, anticipatory, half baked though it is that is what this is about.
We should not surrender to the government, what they are doing is far worse, and more expansive, than you are led to believe.
Right now, the government is the enemy, durov being a strange bedfellow perhaps.
The EU has had digital IDs for years now and they can be used to anonymously (according to the implementation) verify your age alone. The requesting service only receives a binary yes or no if the user is older than 18 or not.
Besides, social media sites are already aware of the identity of nearly all its users. For instance: They all require phone numbers which in many EU nations are directly linked to your ID. And that’s just a single metric! How much do you think do their apps track? How many people grant full contact visibility to them? Why do you think Facebook owns WhatsApp?
That is simply naive. In no world will age verification be done anonymously and without that information being used to collect everything you have done and said.
And no, as bad as it is now, it’s not like it can’t get worse, that’s what this is. You are saying to surrender to tech because you already are getting fucked, and that in surrendering to tech you’re not necessarily surrendering to tech, which you are.
Surrendering to tech, and by extension to the US government, and your own governments that will get a cut of the data.
These new ai threat detection systems they are setting up will have access points in areas these politicians, lower level officials, oligarchs, their contractors, organized groups, hackers, foreign intelligence agencies, etc will be able to access to. This is making everyone vulnerable to make sure your government can see what you are doing.
It’s just sad the west believes their leaders right now and not what’s right in front of their eyes. As I said, there is something wrong with our brains at this point, something systematically wrong because past generations would never have suffered these blatant attempts to end our freedoms of speech without a fight, whether the author had a democrat or socialist or labour title to his name or not.
Are you even from the EU? Every EU citizen has access to an eID per the eIDAS regulation. No AI needed whatsoever to determine your age privately. No AI or US company involved.
If the companies are required to verify user’s age using this - and only this - way, they cannot further identify their users.
Only the government could in theory know your social media profile as a result. But there is absolutely nothing preventing them from requiring social media companies to disclose the phone numbers (and as such identities) of its users already.
Identifying every account, every ip address, with an ID and likeness, will absolutely lead to everything you do or say being recorded, and indeed is the point of these age restrictions. You can give all of the reasonings for why chat control will not surrender privacy, or age controls, but that is the entire point behind doing these, to lock down the internet. Everything you do or say will be connected to your accounts, and it will affect everything you are allowed to see online, whether you get that job, whether you get police scrutiny, how the courts treat you, etc.
Those comments you make on Israel, climate change, environmental issues, the first amongst the issues to secretly effect how you are treated.
It’s not now nor has it ever been about protecting kids. Past generations knew that, our generation trusts the suits that tell them what you just said, there is no way for anyone to know, the information is totally secure and not being saved, trust us. Because if you can’t trust the government, who can you trust? (Me, don’t do it, it’s a trap.)
Besides the fact that nearly very single account on all major social media is already identified, you are also conflating age verification with identification. Age verification can be anonymous but it depends on the implementation.
IP addresses are already linked to your identity. Or does your ISP not know who to bill every month? It’s just they’re not known to the government until a warrant is provided.
Who would you rather trust? Foreign social media companies controlled by hostile governments trying to turn your country fascist or your own government?
All accounts on social media are not identified at all, especially not with likeness from selfie videos and government ID. And there is a difference between the isp having that information, and palantir having it, which is the crux of this whole matter. That is the point to this, giving these ai companies the ability to run everything you say or do or look at through ai threat detection.
It’s a trojan horse, and you are telling us don’t worry they couldn’t fit those guys in there, they did though, that’s the entire reason they left it out there, and that’s the truth.
This Russian app exiled in Dubai deserves as much boycotting as Meta or Amazon.

This is a good point. I think we just need to make it clear that if the government wants enforce these age rules, they are responsible for the API.
I don’t want to give my data to a data broker, but the government could definitely provide such an API.
