Plastic products in the EU could soon be labelled "recycled" — even when they contain barely any recycled material. A new definition backed by most member states allows plastics with as little as 2.5 percent waste-derived content. Critics warn that the rule relies on accounting tricks that may mask fossil-based plastic production.

Meanwhile, of the 78 recycling plants previously announced across Europe, only 18 appear to be operating today, and none of them has disclosed how much recycled material they actually produce.

    Yeah unfortunately it’s much more likely they would spend 50 million to lobby on making the requirements lower rather than 100 million to meet them if their financial models predicted a more profitable outcome
