It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. I tried to switch to a mobile hotspot and my phone refuses to open one. Everyone responsible for this shit should be fed to alligators locked away in a fucking gulag. We have no rights and live in a corporate plutocracy.
It’s fairly straightforward to do this on a Raspberry Pi. You connect the pi to the internet via ethernet or wireless and then follow the instructions for creating a wireless access point.
What does this have to do with phone-based hotspots costing money unnecessarily?
It solves the problem of phone based hotspots costing money unnecessarily.
If you have internet over Ethernet you likely already have wifi. This post is complaining about the cost of tethering to cellular data plans where presumably no alternative Internet sources exist. Most people don’t use wifi hotspots from their phone because they don’t have a Wi-Fi router, they use the hotspot from their phone because they don’t have other internet connections.
Fair enough, that would be a problem. It’s pretty corrupt that Google is now in the pocket with the telecom sector.
Perhaps an open bridge between the cellular network and the access point is what’s required. This would make the Raspberry Pi a 4G internet access point available over Ethernet and WiFi. One SIM with a decent data plan for the Pi and a smaller one for the phone might be a solution.
