Like or dislike doesn’t enter into it. Breaking the Leahy law is not genocide.

Bonus: Biden TECHNICALLY didn’t break the law:

"(a) IN GENERAL. – No assistance shall be furnished under this Act or the Arms Export Control Act to any unit of the security forces of a foreign country if the Secretary of State has credible information that such unit has committed a gross violation of human rights.

        (b) EXCEPTION. – The prohibition in subsection (a) shall not apply if the Secretary determines and reports to the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate, the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, and the Committees on Appropriations that the government of such country is taking effective steps to bring the responsible members of the security forces unit to justice."

That exception is a giant loophole.

So when Biden signed National Security Memorandum-20 in February, 2024:

        https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/national-security-memorandum-safeguards-and-accountability-with-respect-transferred

“requires the Secretary of State to obtain certain credible and reliable written assurances from foreign governments receiving defense articles and, as appropriate, defense services, from the Departments of State and Defense, and requires the Secretaries of State and Defense to provide periodic congressional reports to enable meaningful oversight. In addition to the requirements of this memorandum, the Secretaries of State and Defense are responsible for ensuring that all transfers of defense articles and defense services by the Departments of State and Defense under any security cooperation or security assistance authorities are conducted in a manner consistent with all applicable international and domestic law and policy, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, the applicable “Leahy Law” (22 U.S.C. 2378d, 10 U.S.C. 362), and NSM-18.”

That brought him in line with the Leahy law. 😉

But these are the things the “US is Evil!” radicals on Lemmy don’t want to hear. They didn’t read as far as the exception and don’t care that there is an exception. They NEED to blame the US for Israel’s genocide, because they can’t handle the fact that a genocide can happen without US involvement.

When it’s something centrists don’t want to do, they accept any excuse.

When it’s the ONE thing centrists love more than anything in the world, they look for any loophole.

Blame Leahy for putting the loophole in there in the first place. 😉

God, what a pro-genocide troll you’ll always be. Biden chose to sell weapons for genocide.

Biden did not sell weapons for the purpose of genocide. I get you cannot accept that and will never blame Israel for Israeli war crimes, why is that I wonder? 🤔

He sold them for no other purpose.

I don’t like being complicit in genocide. You worship anyone who murders Palestinians for you.

As stated repeatedly, the weapons were sold for the legitimate defense of Israel, notably from repeated attacks by Iran.

                    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpvne94v1rdo

“The president has made clear Israel has a right to defend its citizens, consistent with international law and international humanitarian law, and to deter aggression from Iran and its proxy organisations.”

Israel then misappropriated those weapons for use in the genocide.

Again, Israeli crimes, committed by Israel. Not that you actually care about blaming Israel for Israeli war crimes.
