It’s not a joke, the headline says she crossed the desert in search of a better life, then he gave her a gold medal.

Why would I joke about that?

You’re just making a lot of assertions. You’re claiming she has a gold guy amd that she’s going to sell the medal. You’re saying she has to walk across a desert to get to this buyer. You’re saying her son is stopping her from getting an uber, and that he doesn’t get her a private chauffeur.

Like, you’re making up this while scenario and seem to think it’s all real?

The joke is OP using absurdist humor, then, when questioned, leaning in and acting obtuse. The part I find funny is all of the responses taking them completely seriously and being confused.

Maybe that was the idea. But the “joke” is executed so badly that people take it seriously because it seems more likely that they were being serious.

Yeah, it’s not a particularly good joke. Basically some light trolling when you think about it.

I’m from the old Internet, this stuff was pretty common. The trick was to wind people up without pushing them so hard that you got the ban hammer from a mod. It’s not something I like to do, but it was fun to watch it play out. I mean, I’ll admit, I do a little shitposting now and then, but if people clearly don’t get the joke I don’t lean in. Different strokes for different folks.

One of the things I like about Lemmy is that old Internet feel you get sometimes. It’s hard to find these days. It’s a mix of shitposts, helpful community, and trolls pushing right up to the edge of community standards. It hits that nostalgia button like a can of Surge and an all night split screen Halo marathon

But now I’ve departed from that mode. If I wanted to keep it going I would have responded to you with shruggy and, in so doing, continue the trolling thread OP started. That’s not me though, not anymore. Anyway, thanks for listening to my TED talk, have a great day,

(ps: I won’t get dragged into an argument about what the old Internet was. This is my opinion, it might stink, but just like my butthole it’s mine. Don’t touch it or I’ll fart on you)
