I’m a long term optimist, short term pessimist. I honestly believe that one day, humanity will come together and expand to the stars. We are the best and only hope that life on this planet has.
But I also know I will never live to see that day. Not even close. Every sign points to looming disaster that will rock us to our core. It’s highly possible we fall back to almost pre-industrial levels of technology within 5 generations, if not worse and for longer. It will be the biggest dark age our society has ever seen.
But here’s the thing about human society, it has been around for a stupidly short time. Barely over 10,000 years. On nearly every scale that matters, that’s a blink. We will bounce back. It could take 200 years, or 2000 years, or even 20000 years; but we as a species will survive. What is important now is preserving knowledge before the collapse. The more we can save and preserve for future generations, the more our future societies will benefit and the faster they can recover.
Thats why I say that I don’t believe humanity is doomed. It’s not about the definition of “doomed”, it’s about the definition of “humanity” and how long of a time frame you consider.
