Pros: Alamo Drafthouse has a strict no phone policy (they eject without refund) and no ads before the show. The only thing they show is kitschy stuff related to the movie. And for Spaceballs, that’s gonna be fun.

I spoke with a server when they first started doing that and they told me that they were also supposed to speak with guests as little as possible. The servers are often movie lovers so I miss being able to talk about the movie before the show. Fuckin’ Sony.

I don’t care how good the movie is, I will wait to watch it in the comfort of my own home for free. Nothing, NOTHING could possibly drag me back into the nightmare of spending $25-$45 just to endure everyone else’s bullshit just to watch a movie. Nothing could possibly make it worth it.

Honestly not a big fan of it myself since it’s such a pain in the ass to see well. But I bought one of those VR headsets and then realized that swinging my arms constantly to stab people in Skyrim was way less fun in practice than I’d imagined it would be so I picked up a few movies.

Idk. I’m in my 40s. Growing up I always imagined VR video games. Actually running around stabbing goblins and innocent passerby and looting them. The VR that exists right now is already better than anything I’d have hoped for. Except the part where people who play loads of video games and people who think it’s fun to physically run in place and swing your arms about endlessly for hours at a time aren’t really groups that tend to intersect very much.
It looks amazing, it’s immersive as all hell, but it’s also tedious as all hell. The few things I bother with any more are all games that I play with a controller, wearing the headset for added immersion. I can still turn my head and have my view change like I’m actually a part of the world, but then just sit on my ass and press buttons on the controllers for everything else.
Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and loads of other gorgeous games with worlds that are flat out amazing to see from a VR point of view can be modded to work with it if your system is beefy enough. But for me it was like it was amazing to get to experience and explore those worlds from a genuine first person point of view, but not the most fun way to just plain play video games. Very glad I spent some time fucking around with it, but after 6 months or so the headset just got perched on my PC tower.
The rare times it gets use these days are mainly for porn maybe once every few months. Which is another thing everyone should experience. Maybe. Seems like one of those things some internet creeps take to like it’s heroin. It’s crazy af and the best thing to happen to porn since shaving, yes, but porn, like heroin, isn’t one of those things I’d like to dedicate the bulk of my life to.
If so, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow since my blood amphetamine level seems to be bottoming out for today. :/
I appreciate your insight. I also appreciate you confirming my suspicions: that VR, even today’s VR, isn’t much more than a novelty that I would very likely get bored of after 6 to 9 months, especially after investing a tremendous amount of money into it. FOMO gone
I’m in my late 40s as well, so I grew up with such VR promises as you did, and I very much doubt that today’s reality could possibly live up to the promises of the aforementioned yesteryear. Not that I wanna become the Lawnmower Man anyway. Also, FWIW, I’m very glad that I can still achieve the requisite amount of immersion by simply staring at my screen. Atmos-enabled headphones help, I will admit. No special goggles required.
Edit: btw, I only just got cyberpunk 2077 during this year’s summer sale on Steam, and I just spent 135 hours on my first play through, and now I’m starting my second play through. It’s the best game I’ve ever played since fallout 4 (my previously favorite game, and I just don’t understand why anyone hate fallout 4. I have over 20,000 hours on that game.) my settlements were built into cities– to the point where the game engine couldn’t handle generating any more NPCs to populate them, so even loading the area just cause content crashes, regardless of how much RAM I had in my machine.
Even though the headset collects dust now, I’d be willing to pay for way more than what I paid to have those 6 months back for the first time again.
I loved Fallout 4 too (started with the first Fallout, played them all), and being able to play Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Cyberpunk in VR is indescribably awesome. Fallout 4 becomes like a horror game. Imagine all the times you’re under ground or in some dark tunnels/buildings without working power, including waking up right after the prologue. It’s pitch black with a head mounted flashlight you can enable by reaching up to the top of your head. Walking through that is so insanely different from playing the game normally, it was an absolute blast. And while you can mod in full VR motion controls, by default the game has you using the thumbsticks like normal.
Using the Jetpack armor to fly into the air, sneaking around groups, even pulling out a gun and ending Mama Murphy’s bullshit (motion controls on that one for sure) is so much more amazing from a view of actually being inside the game. I probably spent 300 hours in that. Way worth the price of a Quest 3.
My PC only has a 4060, so Cyberpunk runs like trash trying to push a VR resolution, but FO4 played perfectly.
Pros: Sound, projection, and seats are all better. Assigned seating is a godsend.
Cons: Prices, people on cell phones, prices, previews/ads push actual start to 20 + (d20 roll) minutes after the listed start, and prices.
